April 2008
Our 2008 season is off to a great start! Our coaches went through our training and now they're ready to work with the youth. Excitement is in the air and practices are beginning. The coaches are holding their small-group talks and the first one is about teamwork and interdependence. In sports like basketball, the mark of a truly great team player is that they make the others around them better. This means that each of us brings something to the court and we all depend upon each other to accomplish our goal. There is no "I" in "team." In other words, real teams work together, support each other and, win or lose, they do it all together. This is what our coaches talk to the players about in Crossover in the first week of practice.
We ended our league at the Lemon Hill Boys & Girls Club with a banquet on April 4th. The first and second place teams won trophies and the players from all of the other teams received awards. We ate barbeque chicken and watched a highlight video from the games. Each coach was a young man from our Crossover Club or from our regular league. They organized and took leadership of this league. Our youth have developed a heart for their community and are giving back. They were each able to speak about the life of one of their players at our banquet as they gave out the Image Award. This award is given to the player that showed strong character both on and off the court. It was awesome to hear the coaches speak about the elementary age players.
God is using all of us to help our community. Like the African proverb says, "It takes a village to raise a child." Please pray for us as God continues to use us in ministry in this community.
God bless,
Omar
